What are Some Workplace Safety Issues?

Safety should be a priority in any workplace. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 3.7 million people in the United States were injured in non-fatal workplace accidents in 2008. Accidents can be prevented if everyone in the company was aware of the common workplace safety issues, and worked together to make the workplace safer.

Slipping and Tripping

Slipping and tripping are workplace safety issues in any work environment, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. If there is a liquid spilled on a slippery floor, take the time to wipe it up. Keep walkways clear of obstructions. Place non-slip strips on stairways made of slippery materials to help reduce accidents. Be careful when climbing up and down ladders to make sure that you do not mis-step on a rung and slip.

Workplace Violence

National labor union AFSCME points out that violence in the workplace is not limited to physical harm. This type of workplace safety issue includes verbal abuse, sexual harassment and bullying. Workplace violence can lead to sick leave being taken, productivity falling and revenue lost to the company. It can also result in injury or even death to all workers. Offer employees counseling if they feel they are having a difficult time at work or at home. Do not ignore the warning signs of abuse or a possible physical attack. Encourage employees to report suspicious activity in other employees, or in people on the property that do not work for the company. Do not rely on employee training alone. Managers need to get involved to help prevent workplace violence.

Electrical Dangers

Nearly every workplace has some sort of electrical service, and that makes electrical safety a workplace health issue. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some workers are unaware that they work among potential electrical hazards. Educate employees on the safe use of electrical equipment such as extension cords and power strips. Encourage employees to point out potential electrical dangers, such as frayed wires, a light socket that is shorting out or any other potential electrical problems.

Visitors

When you allow visitors into your building you become responsible not only for the safety of your guests, but also for the safety of your employees as well. Have all visitors register at the reception area, and do not allow visitors to explore the workplace without an employee as a guide. Visitors may not be familiar with some of the potential dangers in your office, and your visitors could pose a threat to your employees that you are unaware of.
